The White Gull Inn is easily most famous for their Cherry Stuffed French Toast, winner of Good Morning America’s “Best Breakfast in America”. (Bill Weir, a Milwaukee native and then co-host of GMA, discovered the French Toast while living in Green Bay, working as the sports anchor at WLUK.)

BEST FOR: Easily the loveliest, coziest, homiest breakfast spot in Door County.  Plus, pancakes and French toast are served with generous carafes of REAL maple syrup. (HINT: try a bit in your coffee for a decadent treat.)

Welcoming the public since 1896 and run by the same family since 1972 (daughter Meredith is now at the reigns), this is The Spot to have breakfast. It’s everything you want from a Door County breakfast experience, and its popularity is proof.  The cherry stuffed French toast is an indulgent bomb, best enjoyed with some sort of savory side for balance. (We like it with sausage links). Not to be outdone, the daily coffee cake special is equally impressive in both size and flavor wallop. If your breakfast sweet tooth still isn’t satisfied, their fame expands further to the homemade cherry pie – thankfully, available to go.

For those who prefer a savory breakfast (something, frankly, that doesn’t come up much for us) Meredith suggests her favorite: the homemade corned beef hash cooked to order in butter until a crisp crust forms, then topped with eggs over easy and finished with a side of their house-baked Swedish Limpa toast.

INSIDER TIP #1: The White Gull Inn is also our Top Pick for a traditional Door County Fish Boil.

INSIDER TIP #2: Arrive by 8:30am or after 1:30pm to avoid the wait.  Breakfast is served all day until 2:30. Things slow down even more November through May.

INSIDER TIP #3: Embrace the wait by enjoying coffee, baked goods or mimosas on the outdoor patio.  We like to stroll to the end of the street and take in the waterfront views.  Then we’ll follow the wooded path back into town, cut down to the marina, walk along the public docks and stroll back through town. It’s a lovely way to start the morning and a great way to work up an appetite.
